Headaches

A headache or cephalic is a pain in the head or neck region. A headache can be the symptom of different conditions in the head or neck. Headaches can range in causes from benign to more serious problems. The pain from headaches are not the brain feeling pain, but rather a disturbance of the pain-sensitive structures around the brain.

Headaches are non-specific symptoms; meaning it has many possible causes including the following:

  • Fatigue

  • Sleep deprivation

  • Stress

  • Medication and recreational drugs

  • Common cold

  • Head injury

There are two types of headaches, primary and secondary headaches. Primary headaches are benign, recurrent headaches, that are not caused by underlying disease or structural problems. Primary headaches are not dangerous, but they may causes daily pain and disability. Secondary headaches are caused by an underlying disease. Secondary headaches can be both harmless or dangerous, they are caused by problems elsewhere in the head or neck. Cluster headaches are headaches that recurs over a period of time.
